Work Sample Description for DF 2023

I am Zed, a master student from Huaqiao University.

1. Figure 1 is a mezzanine design of a non-standard scaffolding structure system in my early graduate study project. In order to accommodate the corridor space and functional space, many structures do not have base lift poles, and in order to have a large space for the meeting space, there will be a large-span column-free space. The above two special requirements put forward higher requirements for the strength and deformation calculation of the scaffold structure. Finally, the most reasonable arrangement method was determined with the help of parametric design and Karamba, and the number of steel pipes, clamps, and wood beams was calculated. It is the first parametrically assisted construction practice for me. Unfortunately, this experimental project was stopped halfway due to safety concerns.

2. Figure 2 is my essay on the optimization of residential area form. My postgraduate essay is closely related to building simulation. During this period, I studied building simulation software and have some experience in using it. I'm interested in building simulation and computational design, but not very familiar with programming and artificial intelligence. So I tried to combine the genetic algorithm and the building simulation plug-in, conducted some experiments on the planning of residential areas, achieved some results, and published a conference paper. But during the research, I gradually realized the limitations of this method, that is, each optimization takes a lot of time and computing power, and there are a lot of invalid solutions in the optimization process, which will slow down the process of computational design, so now I want to turn to artificial intelligence for more powerful tools. In some studies, properly trained AI models can predict simulation results with high accuracy, saving a lot of simulation time for computational design. Or even more radical: A trained artificial intelligence produces a set of suitable solutions after inputting boundary conditions. I hope that through this work camp, I can learn about the new methods and ideas of newer artificial intelligence-assisted design in green buildings.
